Recently, I tried to watch the movie "Zodiac", but it was so graphic, and disturbing I wasn't quite in a mood to watch the whole thing. Well, by chance if you are not familiar with this movie, here is the summary provided by http://www.imdb.com/:
"A serial killer in the San Francisco Bay Area taunts police with his letters and cryptic messages. We follow the investigators and reporters in this lightly fictionalized account of the true 1970's case as they search for the murderer, becoming obsessed with the case. Based on Robert Graysmith's book, the movie's focus is the lives and careers of the detectives and newspaper people."
I couldn't watch it, not because it was a bad movie...it seemed to be a good movie, a very good movie. In fact from what I saw of it, if this movie had been made in the 70's it would have been considered a masterpiece. However, there have been so many movies about serial killers this one is robbed of some of its thunder, simply because the subject matter is overused. Which ironically interweaves with one of the prominent themes of the film. The whole business with the Zodiac killer is referred to by characters in the film who are members of the media, as "good for business." In other words, this movie documents the gradual change of the news agencies in this country from journalistic entities, to part of the entertainment business. And maybe when a society can turn news coverage of serial murders into "entertainment", it may explain why that society has serial killers to begin with.
Anyways, maybe one of these days I will be up to watching the rest of this movie, and I will give you a more in-depth review.
